After an eventful tour of Cork our U14 team traveled to St. Anne's Tennis Club in Waterford for their final versus Limerick Lawn. An eventful day full of the ups and downs of sport and weather that went from summer sunshine to the rain and wind of a winters day.
First up were the boys and girls singles played by Dillan Murray and Mia Constantinescu. Both got off to a great start winning their first sets comfortably, then the finish line approached and as with all sport it's easier to start than finish. Mia went 4-1 down in the second set, then calmly steadied the ship and put together a run of 5 games in a row to win 6-4. Dillan finished his match a deserving winner.
As Sean O' Halloran and Rachel Barron took to the court for their mixed doubles CIAC were 2-0 up. As expected our opponents were never going to make it easy for us and Limerick Lawns mixed doubles pairing pushed and pulled our two. Rachel Barron hit numerous backhand winners, Sean finishing off some brilliant net play, but despite this after two very close sets including one tie-break Limerick Lawn finished with the win.
Before long our boys and girls doubles where called. Will they? Can they?
Mia and Rachel played some great doubles with Rachel firing from the baseline and Mia finishing things off at the net. The girls were steady when needed and and after winning the first set calmly got home in the second set. The boys at this stage were a set to the good, but it wasn't easy and LLTCs boys were well in it and made our boys work for everything. A third set was needed and CIAC's pair came out on top in the end making CIAC 4-1 winners.
The responsibility of been Head Coach of a club also gives an insight into many young peoples lives. This team is no different with each player having a different relationship with Tennis, but when it gels together it really works. I'm delighted to see this group of players and parents work together in such a positive way and get deserved results. Congratulations and well done to all involved!
